Sunstone Carving with Opal and Pearl
Sunstone Carving with Opal and Pearl
This brilliant carved Sunstone was the star of a recent video about the process of making a gem from a rough Sunstone. Its flowing lines through the carving capture and reflect the light throughout the stone. Joining the flow are an Australian Boulder Opal and a blue-white Pearl. The whole scene embodies light dancing through one of our favorite local elements; water.
The Champagne Sunstone, from Spectrum Mine in Oregon, is left open backed in its Fine Silver setting to let the light shine through. The 11.5 carat Sunstone was hand carved by Karen Britt, you can see the actual stone polished on our VIDEO page.
The Australian Boulder Opal was bought, from the miner, between 25-30 years ago (and since hoarded until now). The Cultured Pearl is also old stock (between 25-30 years old) and is a white-blue tint. The stone settings are fine silver, the body and bail loops are Sterling Silver as well as the hook and loop closure. The hand made, hammered Sterling Silver chain is roughly 18” and adjustable to any length smaller. This piece was fabricated from scratch by Karen Britt. Each piece is a one of a kind piece of art, because no two stones are the same and the settings are created by hand, no two pieces are the same (even the earrings). It should be mentioned that all stones are used in their natural state; never dyed or heated to change their appearance. All the metals used are either recycled or fair, humane trade verified and all components used in the jewelry will return to the earth leaving no footprint. Thank you for enjoying the art.
