Trees in the Tree 18k Gold (TTG03)
In the Coastal Rain-forest, the Sitka Spruce and the Coast Pine create the stunning skyline leading right up to the ocean. The first inspiration, when the idea to make a wood block print from a cross-cut piece of wood from our forest, was to do a tree. This is the celebration of both; the Sitkas printed and gilded in 18k gold that were carved into the Coast Pine cross cut to make this piece.
The Pacific Northwest is home to an incredible rain forest with an abundance of tree species. The Sitka Spruce, Picea sitchensis, is the world’s tallest spruce soaring to 300 feet in advantageous conditions. Two of them are hand carved into this cross cut of Shore Pine. Pinus contorta, or Shore Pine, earns its name for its heavy, twisted limbs formed from adapting to the difficult growing conditions of the coast. The pine print block is left with the natural outer shape of the wood and details like growth rings and cellular texture are evident in the print.
The wood block is prepared to print by hand inking each color in, all at once, like a painting. A piece of 100% cotton rag paper is hand rubbed on the block (no printing press is used) to create a unique print each time. No two are ever alike and every time the block is rubbed, the grains change slightly.
The piece was done entirely by Karen Britt and measures approx. 6” x 5.5” with the actual printed image measuring roughly 4”x 4”. Every print comes with an info sheet about the subject and print. This print comes to you ready to mat and frame in a way of your choosing. Contact us if you wish for this print to be panel mounted and sealed (ready to hang on the wall).
