The month of October is flying by, and with wings on our feet, we’re dancing through our stones to polish, brandishing the torches to create jewelry, and dabbling in the inks for pretty pictures. It’s a busy time to assemble some wonderful art and jewelry for your fall and holiday shopping fun. Check the Shop often for the latest of these fresh works!
Obsidian Sheen with Graveyard Point Plume Necklace
For the remainder of September, the plan is to polish up new Sunstones from the Dust Devil Mine, Obsidian, Rhyolite, Agates, and Jaspers from Central to Eastern Oregon. We just came back from our Wild Outdoor Studio Wildfire/Solstice Edition only to find that our rock buckets are full and there’s plenty of rough to shine. Some will be polished on the Lapidary Machines and others will be hand carved. Check out the jewelry and What’s New section to see the emerging stones and Obsidian will be added to the Gemstones page. In addition, there will be Blog posts covering our trip with pictures ‘in the field’ of where some of these outrageously beautiful rocks and minerals come from.
We went out mining and hunting for some new rock flavors like Sunstones and Opal! Of course there is the thrill of finding and then there’s a fairly involved process of sorting and polishing. It’s fun work and the spoils are amazing. For a week in February, time will be spent creating gems out of the rough stones and then the jewelry design process commences. These pieces of jewelry are made from scratch. That means going and finding the stones, cleaving them, hand polishing them, and finally creating one of a kind settings around the unique qualities of each gem. The art of lapidary and fabricating jewelry happens almost daily at the Ozone. Peek in to see how the work is made, view the finished pieces, and hear some of the stories of Oregon’s volcanic, gem-tacular activity.

One of our most popular shows of the year, the ReNEW show is about art inspired by upcycling, renewable resources and the environment. Pieces on reclaimed woods, paints sourced from local products like Walnut Oils, and 'found object' art pieces are always part of the offerings. Many artists work in this vein all year and others bring out newly created pieces just for this event. Different every year, we never know exactly what we'll get other than fabulous 'out of the box' works of art, that may have even upcycled the box.

Every other year or so we feature Science as a topic for art. This year we’re throwing in the Sea to boot since so much of the inspiration for both local science and local art comes from the sea.
Have you ever wondered how gemstones are made? Well, they're created in the Earth but after they're found, they have to be polished to become gems and then jewelry. Karen Britt uses different techniques to prepare Oregon stones to be set in to original jewelry designs. Ask questions and see how the work is made 'from scratch' to wearable art piece.
During the ReNEW show, we will be creating woodblock prints right in the gallery. In addition, we are doing some really different mounting techniques. INstead of the glass and frame, the prints are mounted to upcycled wood panels, sealed in Encaustic, and framed in found/upcycled woods. Different limited print runs will be printed live at any given time through the show including the Pacific Red Octopus, Moon Jellies, and Seahorses in the Coral.
Saturday, December 2nd is the Lighted Boat Parade in Yaquina Bay! This annual holiday tradition is an absolute 'do not miss' on the holiday bucket list. All sorts of boats adorned in holiday lights cruise the bay in a regatta of luminous splendor. In addition, the Aquarium has the light festival and all of the Bay Front Businesses are lit up an ready for the Holiday Cheer. At the Ozone, we will be offering very special Holiday Shopping Deals and Wine Tasting to really boost that holiday cheer.

Watch as Karen Britt creates Botanical Monoprints in the gallery/studio. Each print is hand inked and arranged with natural, organic flora then hand pressed into a one-of-a-kind print. Some of the prints undergo multiple registrations and treatments with other printmaking techniques like encaustic collograph. The prints are available mounted, unframed (discounted), and as art cards (which we are always asked about this time of year). See what the new offereings are daily as we sell through stock quickly (especially with the cards).
New raw materials have been acquired to make hand polished gemstones and finished pieces of fine art jewelry. The Lapidary (or polishing of the stones) and setting of the stones, or metalsmithing, is done right here in the gallery. The eclipse reignited the vision for the 'Eclipse Over Agate' woodblock print. The current print run will reflect the response, both visual and emotional, of having experienced the event. While the ink is on the palette, print runs of existing blocks will be created in the hauntingly cool hues inspired by the eclipse.

Fit to Print is a long anticipated show featuring the art of Fine Art Printmaking. The show offers the opportunity to see many different kinds of printmaking techniques, learn about the applications, and experience the contemporary edge of its artistic expression. Feature artist Amy Royce has a brand new body of work in a sculptural vein that shines a light on that edge while Ron Zaneveld and Karen Britt show more of a traditional aspect. Michael Guerriero illuminates how realistic serigraphs can be and a variety of other entrants display the spectrum of potential.

Studio space happens where the artist finds oneself and is inspired. The Ozone staff will be out-and-about in the wilds of Oregon gathering vision, passion, and media to bring back to the gallery for the new shows.
