Mark Yanowsky

A balance between nature and artist. Beachscapes revealed in the grain of reclaimed wood. The value of seeing what's there already and realizing the rest with oil and woodburning. These are cues that Mark Yanowsky takes from the environment that he loves to reflect in his art.

"Painting on found wood, with each piece having qualitites of texture, decay, and grain is always an organic and intuitive process. The experience is much like surfing to me. The pursuit of a beautiful line, in a changing environment, is exhilarating."

Mark grew up around tools, metal and wood. Finding ways to put them together was experimentation that he continues today. He is an art teacher in Santa Cruz, California and professes that this kind of experimenting keeps himself and his students moving in a positive direction intellectually with the materials.

The Ozone has had the pleasure of featuring Mark's work for our first Surf Show, Summer 2011. His work with reclaimed and upcycled media has brought him featurettes in our ReNEW, ReClaim, ReMIND shows both years and other shows about ecological awareness.
